How to Take a Payment In Toast

Updated over 5 years ago

This lesson will show you how to take a payment in Toast.

Taking Payment

Within the the ticket, open the payment screen on a ticket by clicking the Pay ($) button.

From here you have several options.

Cash

You can click Cash to cash out the entire ticket for the exact amount.

You can use one of the quick cash buttons for frequent cash amounts. Example: total round up to an even amount, $20 or $50

You can also take just part of the ticket in cash and reserve the rest of the payment for some other form of payment. Example: $5 in cash and the rest on credit card. To do this, type in the exact amount in payment before clicking Cash.

Credit Card

To take a credit card payment, click Credit.

Swipe the customer’s credit card and have them sign the credit card slip receipt that will print out.

PLEASE BE AWARE:

There are two types of settings a terminal can have. Either the terminal will act like a Table Service terminal or a Cashier / Hand Held terminal when it comes to taking payment.

Table Service terminals will print a credit card slip for the guest to sign at the table.

Cashier / Hand Held terminals will use Digital Receipts at the terminal. This will have the guest sign their credit card slip on the terminal, and will not print anything.

* If you are a server and accidentally swiped a guest's credit card at a terminal using Digital Receipts, fret not! You can reprint the credit card slip. Just keep in mind that you'll have to update the tip from the Closed Checks section. More on that in later articles.

*if you are using digital receipts it is important to consider the perception of how you ask a guest to complete payment. Guests may be sensitive to an implication that they are required to tip or they may feel pressure to tip based on the suggested percentages.  Please be sure to guide the guest to complete the payment screen with by saying:

"Please confirm payment and sign with your finger.  You may hit the 'done or complete payment' button once you are ready."

*If you are using digital receipts, the guest will sign the receipt on the terminal. Then it will prompt them for a copy of their receipt.
